“EWWW Image Optimizer requires exec(). Your system administrator has disabled this function.”
EWWW Image Optimizer is probably the best plugin I have used on WP for keeping your image sizes trim and your site speedy.
Unfortunately though, this annoying sentence ‘EWWW Image Optimizer requires exec(). Your system administrator has disabled this function.’ has been a hinderance for some (including myself – my old, old hosting provider refused to enable it!). But, this week my new hosting provider informed me of a simple way round it.
I have a reseller hosting account so I’m not 100% sure if this option will be available for you if you’re on a shared server but it will only take you a minute to try.
This is what I was told:
“You can enable the exec() function at any time by removing it from the disable_functions list in cPanel >> Select PHP version >> Switch to PHP settings. Keep in mind that the settings cannot be modified for the native PHP version, so you need to select an alternative PHP version and make it your current first.”
This is what I did:
1 Login to your cPanel.
2 Go to the ‘Software & Services’ panel > ‘Select PHP Version’.
3 Switch to 5.5.
4 Hit ‘Switch to PHP settings’.
5 Problem solved!
