These days everyone wants your details and personally I hate giving them over. Enter this competition, apply for that service, subscribe to this and that. It’s endless. Once they have your details, what will they do with them? More than likely nothing, but that doesn’t stop the threat of a security breach and your stuff being stolen.
You can claim a small victory by using a dummy email address. I’d been using a dummy for years, I just setup a Gmail account and had it forward to my main account. Eventually, although unsubscribing to various spam emails, it gets sold on and trashed and that’s when you just close that and create another one.
Well, for the last year or so I’ve been using notsharingmy.info. A completely free service that gives you an email address to use and forwards your mail to your main email address. It works flawlessly.
They say ‘We’ll give you an obscure email address that you can give out whenever you want to remain anonymous. All mail sent to that address will be forwarded to you. You can have as many surrogate addresses per one “primary” address as you like.‘
I even have a keyboard shortcut setup on my iPhone for the email address. For my main email I have the first 3 letters and for the dummy email I have the first 3 letters and a ‘1’ so I don’t even have to remember it. Same on my Mac using Text Expander.
Get involved and you’ll protect your email address from being misused and remain anonymous.
